At the heart of every cryptocurrency is a distributed ledger. In many ways, this ledger is very similar to those used in accounting for thousands of years. Users’ available funds and every transaction they make are recorded.

Bitcoin is a digital coin based on blockchain and peer-to-peer validation. It was the first cryptographic currency on the market, paving the way for other coins and setting rules for a whole new industry. No person or entity controls Bitcoin: it is a completely decentralized and autonomous network.

Satoshi Nakamoto’s blockchain technology is revolutionary, but as with most revolutionary ideas, it is based on a simple set of rules. A blockchain is just what its name implies, a chain of blocks each of which contains a set of information. This information is a string of numbers and letters that represent transactions, including the parties to the transaction, the amount of units (in Bitcoin, for example) transacted, and the direction of the transaction. In other words, a block is a virtual ledger that records Bitcoin payments between participants in the digital ecosystem.

Blockchain is the name given to the technology on which cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, are based. Essentially, a blockchain is a database or a ledger. However, unlike traditional databases, blockchains are distributed. This means that they don’t rely on a central authority to update the data they store. Anyone who satisfies the rules of the network supporting a particular blockchain can update the ledger. This enables blockchains to create trust between parties that wouldn’t necessarily trust one another. Everyone can trust the blockchain instead.
