Every crypto cycle is the same: first, Bitcoin dominates headlines and portfolios, but then, quietly, it stops leading. Capital shifts. And the altcoins wake up. Suddenly everything that looked dead is posting 3x, 5x, 10x gains in a matter of weeks.
That's altcoin season for you. Not a psyop and not an urban legend either. A recurring, measurable market phase, and one of the most significant wealth-transfer events in crypto.
The main problem with altseason is that people often show up late, act on instinct instead of signals, and confuse noise with opportunity.

Altcoin season (also called altseason) is a market phase in which the majority of altcoins, cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin, outperform BTC over a sustained period, typically lasting anywhere from several weeks to a few months.
Basically, Bitcoin gets the rally started, and altcoins finish the job. As BTC price stabilizes or plateaus, profit-taking begins, and that liquidity doesn't just sit idle. It rotates. Into Ethereum first, then into large-cap alts, then progressively down the risk curve into mid-caps and small-caps.
What altcoin season is not: a random pump, a coordinated event, or something anyone officially declares. But there are signals. And those signals are consistent, readable, early ones, and that's exactly what the rest of this guide is about.
Understanding altcoin season is all about understanding why money moves the way it does in crypto. Once you see the logic, the pattern becomes readable. Almost predictable.
Crypto markets don't move randomly. They rotate in a consistent, hierarchical order that follows one simple principle: capital flows from certainty toward opportunity.
It starts with Bitcoin. BTC is the entry point for most institutional money and the benchmark everything else gets measured against.
When a new bull cycle begins, Bitcoin leads. It's the safest bet in a speculative asset class, which tells you something about the asset class, but that's a different article.
As Bitcoin's price appreciates and early holders sit on significant gains, something shifts. The upside starts feeling capped. Not because BTC is done, but because a 2x on a $1T asset is a lot harder to achieve than a 2x on a $10B one. So capital starts looking elsewhere.
Ethereum moves next. It's liquid, it's trusted, it has narrative: DeFi, Layer 2s, whatever the cycle's story happens to be. ETH absorbs the first wave of BTC rotation and often posts its own strong run before the broader market catches fire.
Then the cascade begins:
It's the same sequence that played out in 2017, in 2021, and through the compressed, faster rotations of 2024 and 2025.
Three forces converge to create alt season, and they always arrive in roughly the same sequence.
These three forces operate in sequence. And knowing where you are in that sequence is the difference between positioning and chasing.
Bitcoin Dominance measures BTC's market cap as a percentage of the total crypto market. It's the closest thing to a macro x-ray of the market that exists.
How it works: when money flows into Bitcoin relative to everything else, dominance rises. When it flows out into altcoins, dominance falls.
However, falling bitcoin dominance only means something, if total market cap is growing too.
In a situation when Bitcoin dominance drops because everything is selling off and altcoins are just losing value more slowly than Bitcoin, that's not alt season, that's a bear market. We cover this scenario in this article on why bitcoin is down.
For altcoin season, you need both: dominance falling and the overall market cap rising. One without the other is a false signal.
What to watch for: Bitcoin dominance consistently dropping below 50%, accompanied by rising total market cap. Historically, that combination has preceded the strongest altcoin runs.
Altcoin season index is the most direct answer to the question "Are we in alt season yet?", and it's built on a clean, transparent methodology.
The index compares the 90-day price performance of the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market cap against Bitcoin's performance over the same period minus stablecoins and wrapped tokens.
If 75% or more of those coins are outperforming Bitcoin: it's Altcoin Season. If 25% or fewer are: it's Bitcoin Season. The score runs from 1 to 100.

The index hit 98 on April 16, 2021, near its theoretical maximum, which tells you exactly how violent a real alt season looks in data form.
The truth about this tool is: it's inherently backward-looking. It measures the last 90 days.
By the time the index crosses 75, a meaningful portion of the move has already happened. The traders who made real money in 2021 weren't waiting for the index to confirm alt season, they were positioned before it did.
Verdict: Use the index as a reality check and a confirmation tool only.
The indicators above tell you what happened. Market behavior signals tell you what's about to.
Here are market events that you should watch closely:
Quick checklist. You're likely in altcoin season if:
Knowing what alt season is won't make you money. Knowing what to do before it starts might.
The best time to prepare is when it feels the least exciting - when BTC dominance is elevated, altcoins are bleeding against Bitcoin, and nobody is talking about 10x opportunities. That's the window.
Watch for Bitcoin plateauing after a significant run. Not crashing, just going sideways. Volatility compresses, the market looks boring, and capital that rode the BTC trade quietly starts looking for the next move. That's rotation loading.
Alt season is not about "buy everything and wait."
Keep it simple: two buckets.
What doesn't work: buying 40 random coins across every narrative because it feels like diversification. It’s not. Pick fewer things and know why you own them. Have an exit strategy before you enter.
Alt season moves fast. The gap between early and too late is measured in days.
When rotation hits a mid-cap asset it can double before most people notice it's moving. By the time it surfaces in a newsletter, the move is done.
Your infrastructure matters as much as your analysis. If rotating between assets requires multiple platforms, KYC queues, and 48-hour withdrawal windows, you won't rotate in time.
Setup matters before the season starts, not during it.
What you actually need is: fast swaps, access to a wide range of assets, and zero registration friction.
ChangeNOW is built for it. You don't need an account for basic swaps, there are 1,400+ supported assets on the platform, and cross-chain swaps execute in minutes.
The market rewards good decisions, but it also punishes predictable ones. Some patterns repeat every single cycle, and cost people real money every time.
Entering too late
The most common retail trap. By the time alt season is undeniable: index above 75, every coin green, mainstream coverage, the move is largely priced in. The whole point of reading signals is to act before the confirmation, not after it.
Chasing pumps
An asset that's already up 200% in a week is not as good of an opportunity as it may seem. It's actually a risk. Buying because of FOMO is how people turn a good market into a personal loss.
Ignoring BTC signals
Altcoins don't exist in a vacuum. If Bitcoin suddenly drops hard, alt season stops right that instant. Alts fall faster and further than BTC in a risk-off move, and they take longer to recover. Keeping one eye on BTC at all times is the baseline.
Overtrading
More trades ≠ more profit. Every swap has a cost: fees, spread, timing risk. Traders who churn their portfolio constantly during alt season often underperform the people who made three well-timed moves and held.
Not having an exit
This one can be lethal for people’s wallets. Gains on paper are not your real gains.
Alt season has a ceiling. It always ends, usually faster than it started. Knowing before you enter what price or signal triggers your exit is the difference between locking profit and watching a 10x become a 2x on the way back down.
Altcoin season is a rotation phase when capital moves through the market in a predictable sequence, driven by liquidity overflow, expanding risk appetite, and retail FOMO arriving fashionably late.
The opportunity is real. But… So is the risk of misreading it.
Timing and discipline consistently beat luck over multiple cycles. Getting in before the confirmation, sizing positions with intention, and having an exit before you need one - that's your playbook.
Knowing which asset to move into matters as well. And being able to move into it instantly becomes an edge. Tools like ChangeNOW exist precisely for that moment: 1,400+ assets, no account required for swaps, and cross-chain transactions executed in minutes.
The market rewards the prepared. Everything else is just watching other people's screenshots.
