San Jose Sharks Introduces Crypto Payments into Hockey

San Jose Sharks makes history as the first ever NHL team to offer tickets for cryptocurrency. The California-based team joins a steadily growing list of professional sports teams all over the world to adopt crypto.

San Jose Sharks president, Jonathan Becher,  revealed on Tuesday that the NHL team will become the first pro hockey  team to sell sport merchandise for crypto. Citing the gradual introduction of crypto services into mainstream payment systems, Becher suggested the team’s recent decision was inevitable.

“We’re accepting PayPal, so then by definition, we’re accepting cryptocurrency. Why not embrace it and make it more visible as opposed to just doing it through a third party,” Becher said.

To make seamless payments possible, the NHL team will be collaborating with a crypto network service provider, BitPay, and will be accepting popular crypto payment options: Dogecoin (DOGE), Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), and Ethereum (ETH).  Five other stable coins have also been added to the list, including Paxos Standard Token (PAX) and Dai (DAI).

At the initial stage, only luxury suite leases and season tickets are planned to be made available for purchase, using BitPay. However, with time, fans will be able to buy more game tickets with their crypto. San Jose Sharks is not only particular about the accessibility of sports merchandise to crypto enthusiasts, it is also planning to make sales of food and other items on the arena available for purchase with crypto.

One for the Future

Sharks President, Becher, predicts more crypto-oriented developments within the team in the near future.  Apart from considering the possibility of developing Sharks’ memorabilia as an NFT collection, Becher confessed there might be more crypto projects on the horizon.

“I do think the blockchain will have more of an impact on sports & entertainment than people realize,” Becher wrote in one of his tweets.

Sharks join an increasing number of US sports teams who have embraced the cryptocurrency space, and an already impressive catalogue of teams around the world already affiliated with the crypto industry.

The biggest American martial arts organization,  UFC, only just launched its official $UFC token a month ago. PFL launched theirs some weeks before UFC.  Juventus FC, Liverpool, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid are just a few soccer giants offering merchandise purchase with crypto tokens. San Jose Sharks is the new sports team on this list, and the only one of its kind. For now.You can buy or trade any top crypto for the sport-oriented Chiliz token on ChangeNOW.
