What is DOT?

Polkadot is a protocol in which independent blockchains exchange information. The Polkadot project is the brainchild of the co-founder of Ethereum, Dr. Gavin Wood. Dr. Gavin created Polkadot to make inter-blockchain transactions possible, eliminating the long-standing problem of scalability of a single blockchain. Polkadot can interact both with relay chains and parachains. Such an ability will allow users more private and efficient transactions. The project’s native token DOT serves mainly three purposes - governance, staking, and bonding. DOT token holders can vote, earn rewards on their stake or add new parachains by bonding. This way the project gives the users full control over the protocol - the ecosystem doesn't have miners. Instead, it leverages a Proof-of-Stake algorithm so the holders can manage protocol upgrades and other fixes. The project uses game theory and rewards users who behave honestly while making cheaters lose part of their stake. In 2022 the Polkadot network launched a Polkadot DevCamp. It is a curated education program led by Polkadot experts, at the end of which developers should be able to build a blockchain with Substrate. The course will begin in May and last three weeks.

Polkadot (DOT) FAQ

  • Polkadot is a next-generation multichain protocol that connects different blockchains into a unified network. It enables cross-chain transfers of any data or asset types — not just tokens — making a wide range of applications possible.

  • Polkadot allows multiple blockchains (called parachains) to run in parallel while sharing security through a central chain known as the Relay Chain. This enables scalability, high throughput, and secure interoperability between chains.

  • DOT is the native cryptocurrency of the Polkadot network and plays a critical role in its functionality. It is used for governance, allowing holders to participate in decision-making processes such as protocol upgrades and network policies. DOT also supports the network’s security through staking, where users lock up their tokens to validate transactions and earn rewards in return. Additionally, DOT is essential for bonding, a mechanism used to connect new parachains to the network by temporarily locking tokens during their onboarding process.

  • Polkadot uses on-chain governance where token holders, the Council, and the Technical Committee collaborate to propose and vote on changes. This transparent model enables continuous evolution of the network.

  • Polkadot’s security model is based on shared security through the Relay Chain and Nominated Proof of Stake (NPoS). Validators secure the network, while nominators support them by staking DOT. Disclaimer: it’s crucial to do your own research (DYOR) before engaging in any kind of investment.
