What Is Ripple?

Ripple is technically a financial ledger that started off by Ripple Labs Inc. on blockchains and works with XRP as its native currency. Built on an open-source protocol, Ripple crypto was launched in 2012. However, it was only 2018 that marked the stable release of the XRP cryptocurrency.

The idea is to share a common ledger on a distributed database where all the account and transaction information can be stored and validated by independent servers. These servers can belong to any entity within a financial network — from banks to market makers.

As one of Ripple's primary objectives was to offer a cheap XRP exchange alternative, the Ripple cryptocurrency cost is relatively quite low in the digital cryptocurrency market. The supply, on the other hand, is far higher even than that of Bitcoin. While 60% of XRP tokens remain with Ripple, 38 bln are already in the market, and 100 bln have already been pre-mined to be available on periodical release.
