Katy Perry Launches NFTs In Partnership With Theta Labs Inc.

American pop music artist Katy Perry has announced to her millions of followers that she will be launching a line of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for her already massive fanbase.

American pop music artist Katy Perry has announced to her millions of followers  that she will be launching a line of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for her already massive fanbase.

Perry’s collectible crypto tokens will be produced in collaboration with Theta Labs Inc; a leading decentralized video delivery network powered by users and the Theta native blockchain. Following the new partnership, Perry would also be acquiring a stake in the Theta network.

According to a press release from Theta Labs, the singer-songwriter's role in the partnership with the network involves the sale of digital collectibles obtained from her coming “Play” residency which starts December 2021 at the Resorts World Las Vegas Hotel, which will see the artist perform 16 shows.

Perry's tokens will pay tribute to her events, and fans who want to obtain a Katy Perry NFT can register for the first drop at Katy.ThetaDrop.com starting today. Apart from commemorating her "Play" residency, it is still unclear what these tokens will contain.

What Katy Perry’s Partnership Entails

Theta network allows users to watch video content and at the same time earn digital currency rewards for passing videos on to other users who are also watching the same content. Tweeting to her hundreds of millions of followers, Katy Perry declared herself simultaneously enthusiastic and intrigued by the imminent launch, and sees the unique incorporation of NFTs into her music as a way to include fans outside of Las Vegas.

“I can’t wait to dive in with the Theta team on all the exciting and memorable creative pieces, so my fans can own a special moment of my residency that’s both a digital collectible as well as an IRL experience.”

The actual sale of the NFTs likely will begin in Q4 of this year, according to Theta Network’s NFT platform ThetaDrop.

While the use and support of NFTs have raised  criticisms from climate activists who insist that blockchain-based art emits too much carbon dioxide, Theta protocol’s blockchain uses a Proof of Stake model that aims to mitigate energy usage.

Katy's Interest In Crypto Not Sudden

Alongside several celebrities, Katy first broadcasted her affiliation with cryptocurrencies by posting a photo of her nails on Instagram with the caption “$—CrYpTo ClAwS—$”. Each nail was decorated with a 3D symbol to represent a different cryptocurrency.

She also posted a picture of herself in November 2017 with successful investor Warren Buffet. The post had the caption, “...just asking Warren Buffett his thoughts on cryptocurrency."

The pop singer is not the only star to show interest in digital currencies or to drop a token as in recent months celebrity NFT's have evolved into quite a trend.

Other celebrities to participate in the NFT trend include Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Snoop Dogg, Ellen DeGeneres, Grimes, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and many others.
