Israel's Mossad Lists Opening For Crypto Expert
Not only governments are seeking cryptocurrency innovations – national intelligence agencies are also pressing for crypto solutions, as shown by Mossad’s interest in new crypto entrants.
Mossad, Israeli’s national intelligence agency, is reportedly in search of a cryptocurrency expert with a minimum of 3 years of experience working in financial technology.
According to reports from local news outlets, the government agency outlined very specific requirements in the job listing but did not say in particular why it would be needing a crypto expert, leaving the public to speculate.
Why Mossad’s Interest is Significant
Mossad, the shortened form of HaMossad leModiʿin uleTafkidim Meyuḥadim, is Israel's national intelligence agency, and is in charge of gathering intelligence and carrying out undercover operations. The organization also works to nullify terrorism within the nation.
While the job description indicates that the crypto expert roles will largely consist of "leading, initiating, planning, and accompanying systems development activities", speculations by local media point in a somewhat different direction.
For instance, Ynet, a rather prominent Israeli news site, thinks that Mossad probably intends to use cryptocurrencies to make anonymous payments to its intelligence agents and also to use virtual currencies to purchase equipment. For an organization such as Mossad, covertness in financial transactions is probably of the utmost importance.
Israel To Use Crypto In Counter-Terrorism
As this is the first time Israel has released a public announcement of such nature, there is quite some speculation as to whether this could mean a broader adoption of cryptocurrency in the future.
Most of Israeli Government's recent interactions with the crypto industry have to do with the popularity of Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies within the militant sector of Hamas.
Hamas has made attempts to resolve its financial isolation by staging crypto fundraising campaigns on various social media platforms. Through an ICD-ICT report published last year, it was gathered that wallets allegedly tied to both Hamas and the Iran-affiliated terrorist group al-Nasser Salah al-Deen Brigades were able to collect nearly 3,370 BTC over a total of four years.
Sometime in July, Benny Ganz, Israel's Minister of Defense, had to sign an order granting Israeli security personnel permission to seize cryptocurrency accounts they believed were linked to Hamas forces. This came after the organization increased its crypto fundraising efforts in May.
The growing adoption of crypto globally has unsurprisingly led the governing bodies of various nations to seek a greater understanding of the industry.
