The Brave browser is one of the decentralized advertising services available on the market. The project was launched in 2017, at the very peak of blockchain popularity. The team of creators was headed by a well-known IT specialist Brendan Eich. Being recognized as the author of JavaScript, he participated in the development of the world-famous browser Mozilla Firefox.
The Brave browser allows users to store their private data on their devices by blocking trackers and keeping it anonymous. Basic Attention coin is built on the Ethereum network. Such a choice of a network provides several advantages to the project, especially the fact that it makes BAT cryptocurrency mining quite rewarding and attractive for crypto enthusiasts. The BAT token was created to tackle the issues a major part of the advertising industry faces, including malware, a high percentage of revenue taken by platforms such as Google, and credibility crises. BAT is also utilized as a reward that users can receive in exchange for participation.
In July 2022, Brave introduced a new system for privacy-preserving data collection titled STAR. Such a system allows users to “participate in private data collection, under cryptographic guarantees that their data will be readable only if other users have contributed the exact same values”.
