Aurora is a Layer-2 blockchain technology based on the Near Protocol. It is an Ethereum Virtual Machine and was created by the team behind NEAR. The project’s mainnet was launched in 2021 to provide users with a platform that is Ethereum-compatible and fit for the operation of applications.
The Aurora network allows users to benefit from low transaction fees, high throughput, and scalability. For example, with the help of the Aurora network, users can move smart contract-based apps from the Ethereum blockchain to the NEAR’s Layer-2 networks. Users of Aurora can also access a free membership program, Aurora+. The program allows holders to access free transactions and earn rewards in exchange for staking AURORA tokens. AURORA is an ERC-20 token with a fixed supply that has been bridged to NEAR via Rainbow Bridge. Rainbow Bridge, or rather Rainbow Bridge 2.0, is the official bridge for the transfer of tokens between the Ethereum, NEAR, and Aurora networks.
On September 12th, 2022, at NEARCON, the CEO of Aurora Labs, Alex Shevchenko, announced several major updates to the Aurora+ program. New features have been added to the membership program, including Aurora+ Swaps, Referral Program and Fiat On-Ramp.
