Hyperliquid updates: Why HYPE Is Up

TL;DR: Three things seem to have pushed HYPE higher: new ETF access, active buybacks, and whales buying in - all as the September token unlock hit.

Institutional capital gained direct access to the token this month. Hashdex added HYPE to its Nasdaq-listed crypto index ETF on September 3, and Bitwise's spot HYPE ETF gave institutions a regulated way to buy in.

Hyperliquid's automated buyback mechanism amplified this demand. The protocol uses trading fees to buy and burn tokens, permanently removing nearly 48 million HYPE (4.8% of total supply) from circulation. A reduced supply means new buying pressure moves the price faster.

Whales showed up to the party too. One wallet alone picked up 343,000 HYPE, about $29 million, and staked the whole position.

Not everyone shared the enthusiasm though. Multicoin Capital sold took the opposite trade, selling a portion of its holdings to lock in profits near the highs.

Hyperliquid Token Unlock: Litmus Test for Investors

Every month, a fresh batch of HYPE tokens unlocks for Hyperliquid's core contributors. September 6 was just the latest one.

Hyperliquid's token unlock schedule runs on autopilot. It happens the same day each month with the same batch size. So, mark your calendars, the next unlock is on October 6.

Each release works as a small test of investors’ confidence: will demand keep absorbing new supply, or will it crack?

Unlocked ≠ Claimed: The Difference

Quick reminder: Unlocked doesn't mean claimed.

Take the previous unlock event: on August 6, the market waited for a $620 million release. How much actually got claimed and moved? About $22.65 million. And the price of HYPE went up 0.7% the next day. Just saying.

Possible reasons for not claiming HYPE?

• Long-term conviction: Investors believe the token's value will keep rising. If they don't plan to sell at the current price, there's zero rush to cash out.
• Saving on gas fees: Claiming tokens requires paying network transaction fees. It makes financial sense to let them sit until the holder is actually ready to trade.
• Ecosystem incentives: Often, leaving tokens untouched or keeping them within the protocol yields additional rewards, staking benefits, or platform perks.
• "Diamond hands" signaling: Not claiming is a show of confidence. It tells the market that early backers are calm, and chill, here for the long haul.

ChangeNOW Insights: Internal Swap Data on HYPE

While unlocked tokens remained on smart contracts, traders drove up volume. ChangeNOW’s internal data shows swap activity for HYPE doubled in August.

• Monthly swap growth: +94.02% in August compared to July.
• Statistical validation: With a 95% confidence interval ranging from +79.56% to +109.65%, the upward shift is statistically significant.

Several factors could explain this rise of interest. It could be the price which in August saw a strong momentum, ETF inflows looming on the horizon, or new protocol updates, or, maybe, it was everything at once.

Anyways, Hyperliquid token seems to be in its prime era. Which is great, at least something is.
