Executive Summary
- Cypherock X1 is a hardware wallet built around one premise: private keys never leave the device. cySync, its desktop companion app, gave users portfolio visibility — but no way to act on it without routing assets through a centralized exchange first.
- ChangeNOW became the exchange layer inside cySync. Users initiate swaps, sign transactions on the X1, and receive assets at their chosen address — no CEX account, no custody gap, no platform balance.
- The outcome: a multi-platform detour collapsed into a single environment, support load from external exchange steps dropped, and cySync moved from portfolio viewer to action layer — while Cypherock's engineering stayed focused on hardware.
Hardware Wallet Users Still Need Portfolio Actions
Cypherock X1 is a hardware wallet built for users who want full control over their crypto — no exchanges, no custodians. cySync is its desktop portfolio management app. Together they give users a cold-storage environment for managing crypto — but until recently, not for acting on it.
To rebalance BTC into ETH, a cySync user had to withdraw to Binance, execute the trade there, and send ETH back to the wallet. That detour meant extra transactions, avoidable fees, and a custody gap: assets temporarily sitting in an exchange account, subject to that platform's controls.
This case covers how Cypherock solved that by integrating ChangeNOW as the exchange layer inside cySync — and what it took to bring swap functionality into a self-custody environment without changing its premise.
Bring Swaps Into cySync Without Creating an Exchange Workflow
The product task was to bring crypto swaps into cySync without turning a hardware wallet user into an exchange user.
A successful integration meant one thing: a swap flow that starts and ends inside cySync, requires no exchange account, and keeps transaction signing on the Cypherock X1. The constraints around custody had to stay intact throughout — private keys never leave the device, user balances don't sit in third-party infrastructure, and no CEX login or pre-funded account is required at any point.
Asset coverage added another layer. Hardware wallet portfolios are rarely limited to one chain, and rebalancing often means moving value across networks. The swap layer needed broad coin and token support, cross-chain routes, and both fixed-rate and floating-rate options.
Building exchange infrastructure internally wasn't a viable path. Liquidity discovery, pair routing, rate management, and settlement across hundreds of networks are not core to what Cypherock builds. Taking that on would have added significant engineering overhead and ongoing maintenance without improving what makes Cypherock valuable: secure self-custody hardware.
Solution: ChangeNOW Provided the Exchange Layer Behind cySync
When a swap starts in cySync, ChangeNOW acts as the intermediary between the deposit side and the payout side. The user selects the asset pair and payout address, sends the deposit, and receives the exchanged asset at the chosen destination — no exchange login, no pre-funded platform balance.
The core technical challenge was connecting ChangeNOW's deposit address generation to the outgoing transaction signed by the Cypherock X1, without breaking the existing transaction flow in cySync. On the UI side, the task was mapping payout address selection into the interface without adding friction for the user.
The same integration had to handle cases where the exchange doesn't go through cleanly. If a swap fails or a minimum amount condition isn't met, the refund goes back to the original address without manual intervention — no support ticket, no stuck funds. Low-liquidity pairs and cross-chain routes are managed at ChangeNOW's routing layer, with realistic time estimates surfaced in the UI before the user confirms.
The asset base behind this layer: more than 1,500 assets and over 2 million trading pairs across 110+ networks, covering the multi-chain mix that hardware wallet portfolios typically require.
Result: A Shorter Swap Path From the Hardware Wallet Environment
For cySync users, the practical change was straightforward: a multi-step process that previously crossed two or three platforms now happens in one environment. Users initiate the swap inside cySync, sign the outgoing transaction with their Cypherock X1, and receive the exchanged asset at the chosen address — no exchange account, no platform balance, no temporary move off cold storage.
Since launch, swap usage inside cySync has grown steadily. Support queries related to external exchange steps have decreased, and user feedback has pointed to reduced friction as a meaningful improvement to the day-to-day experience. Most liquid routes complete in minutes; cross-chain swaps and lower-liquidity pairs may take longer.
For Cypherock, the integration extended cySync from a portfolio viewer into an action layer — a more complete product without added infrastructure responsibility. That shift directly supports the case for cySync as a daily-use environment rather than a passive monitoring tool.
Takeaway: Hardware Wallets Are Moving From Storage to Utility
The Cypherock case reflects a broader product shift. Storage remains the foundation, but users now expect portfolio actions inside the same trusted environment — and the gap between storage and utility doesn't require building exchange infrastructure to close.
The integration showed that embedded swap capability can come from the right partner rather than from internal development. The constraint worth preserving is the custody model. Everything else can be sourced externally without compromising what the hardware wallet is for.
"Integrating ChangeNOW into cySync gave us a swap layer we could trust without building one from scratch. The technical integration was straightforward, the asset coverage met our users' needs from day one, and the support throughout the process was responsive and practical. It let us focus on the hardware wallet experience while adding a capability our users had been asking for."

The same exchange layer Cypherock integrated is available via API — no liquidity infrastructure to build, no routing to manage. If swap functionality is on your product roadmap, the integration path is shorter than it looks. Register, get your API key, and test it against your stack.
