Cardano has ticked off one of the biggest talking points of its roadmap after a successful fork to Alonzo White on Thursday. What next after Cardano’s launch and what significance does its new upgrade hold?

Cardano Makes Statement With Alonzo Hard fork

Cardano’s upgrade to Alonzo White is one of its major milestones in its bid to become the de facto home of the booming DeFi industry.  The upgraded Cardano network will allow it to integrate more advanced smart contracts and decentralized finance applications to its blockchain, just like Ethereum’s. Cardano’s incorporation of smart contracts changes the existing landscape of the DeFi industry, especially as its development team is intent on establishing seamless interoperability between other blockchain networks.

"Delighted to report around 19.44 UTC today we successfully forked the alonzo testnet to the new alonzo white node. The new network is happily making blocks already," Input Output HK, the research firm behind the development of Cardano, tweeted yesterday.

What is all the excitement about Cardano’s upgrade? The excitement revolves around the introduction of smart contracts. The Ethereum blockchain network created in 2013 integrated smart contract functionality only soon after the publication of its whitepaper. Since Ethereum’s launch, the novel blockchain network has hosted thousands of decentralized applications (dApps) and currently leads in the number of dApps on its platform.

Cardano’s recent upgrade is set to bring some valid competition to the table, even despite denials of any form of competition by Cardano’s founder, Charles Hoskinson.

What Next For Cardano?

The Alonzo White hard fork is just the latest in the series of planned milestones since scheduled by the Cardano Organisation. Following the Alonzo White hard fork will be the Alonzo Purple, and Alonzo Red, which would optimize the Cardano network and integrate developers and brokers, among other features.

Regardless of future plans, its recent upgrade is a monumental statement spelling Cardano’s ambitions, and its fresh interoperability functions and yet-to-be developed scalable solutions are strong causes of optimism for Cardano devotees.
