Buterin Finally Ends Silence on Hoskinson’s Cardano with Subtle Praise
Ethereum founder, Vitalik Buterin, has finally acknowledged Cardano’s growing significance in the industry, after a long seeming feud with Cardano’s founder, Charles Hoskinson.
Charles Hoskinson, famously left Ethereum in 2014. The mathematician and programmer co-founded the second most influential cryptocurrency with Vitaik Buterin and a team of six other crypto enthusiasts in 2013. Hoskinson would soon leave Ethereum after a philosophical dispute with Buterin.
Two years after leaving Ethereum, Hoskinson started the Cardano Foundation. Cardano has grown with a deliberate “academic” brand since its launch, a fact Buterin only just acknowledged this week. While Ethereum has been the rugged platform redefining the crypto space and the DeFi industry in particular, Cardano has taken a more patient and holistic approach.
Cardano was one of the first crypto projects to introduce and adopt the Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, which is considered to be significantly more energy efficient than Ethereum’s Proof of Work (PoW). Now, in 2021, Ethereum leads the second generation of crypto projects planning to switch to the more environmentally friendly PoS mechanism.
Ethereum is not the only one switching camps, it appears; its founder is having a change of heart as well. Vitalik Buterin is seemingly impressed by his former colleague once again, after refusing to give direct comments on Cardano for years.
Speaking at Lex Friedman’s podcast, the Ethereum founder admitted to finding Charles Hoskinson “mature and confident” and took time to praise Cardano for its “interesting ideas.”
Commenting on Cardano’s patient approach, as the blockchain currently undergoes the Alonzo hard fork, Buterin said:
_“I do think that Cardano takes a bit of a different approach compared to Ethereum, and they really emphasize these big academic proofs for everything. Ethereum tends to be more OK with heuristic arguments…There are definitely some very interesting things that come out of the IOHK research._”
However, Buterinwent on to emphasize that overly meticulous academic approaches might be overrated because most failures tend to happen outside academic models.
Only recently Charles Hoskinson denied any thoughts of competition with Ethereum, touting Cardano as the superior network despite Ethereum's imminent switch to PoS.
